Professional practice
As an editorial illustrator the main aim is to create an illustration that clearly communicates the text whilst being able to engage a viewer, to successfully do this the illustrator must be able to communicate with the editor, as Selby says, ‘The best examples of editorial illustration are created by a successful partnership between the illustrator and their commissioning editor or art director’ (2022)
Finding a publication that fits your style is very important as a successful illustration will be able ‘to evoke strong emotions in readers’ (Gabriele, 2021). For example, an illustrator with a humorous style may not work in a publication for more conservative readers if the tone of the publication and the style didn’t complement each other. Illustrators are normally provided with a brief which shows the time frame for the work to be completed, the context of how the illustration will be seen (will it be printed or online? What size should it be?) and the material or concept the illustrator needs to convey in the piece.
